TSA's Bioswale
Parking Lot Bioswale Under Construction
Bioswales are a landscape designed to capture and slow storm water run-off and treat it before releasing the run-off into the storm sewer system. As the storm water flows through the bioswale sediments and other pollutants will settle out and thus, fewer pollutants flow into the sewer system and subsequently into the watershed.
TSA's bioswale is located on the 15th Street side of our visitor/student parking lot and was designed by Mannik and Smith Group, Inc. It contains 275 plants that are a variety of trees, shrubs, grasses and native, wetland type wildflowers. These plants were selected to tolerate the changing weather conditions in our area and because of this, they require less maintenance. TSA science students will use the bioswale as a "living lab," collecting and testing storn water run-off, watering, weeding and integrating the project into the science curriculum in various other ways.
Construction of the bioswale began in early spring 2012 and with the help of enthusiastic TSA faculty, staff, and students planting occurred on May 8th.
We hope you'll stop by to visit the beautiful, thriving bioswale in person, but until then you can view photos of the project by clicking on our photos page above.
